Mercy Health Network (MHN) President and CEO Bob Ritz announced today Mary Cownie has been named the organization’s Chief of Staff. She will assume her role beginning September 18th.

In this position, Cownie will provide strategic counsel and tactical liaison to the MHN leadership team and other business units on a wide range of projects, issues and activities. Key responsibilities include: developing and fostering relationships with a variety of constituencies statewide; project management and oversight; and coordinating CEO-led initiatives.

“We are excited to have Mary join our team,” says Ritz. “Mary’s community and statewide leadership experience uniquely positions her to strengthen Mercy Health Network’s relationships state-wide. Her strategic and administrative counsel will benefit our organization moving forward.”
Cownie, who has been director of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs for the past six years, is an Iowa native with a B.A. degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She has also been involved with a number of community organizations, including the Mercy-Des Moines Board of Directors, the Mercy Foundation Board, Character Counts, the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute, Junior Achievement of Central Iowa, and the West Des Moines Planning and Zoning Commission.

“I have long been a supporter of the good work Mercy Health Network does around Iowa and surrounding communities, so I am honored to be able to step into a role like this,” offers Cownie. “I am excited to get started, because I know I will be able to have a positive impact on how we continue to evolve as a statewide organization and deliver on our mission of health and healing.”
